Gold Filled vs. Gold Vermeil

Gold Filled vs. Gold Vermeil

You may be wondering what the difference is between Gold Vermeil and Gold Filled Jewellery?

Gold Vermeil

Gold Vermeil  (pronounced vermay) constitutes a base metal of sterling silver and a layer of gold to the outside. Gold Vermeil always uses Sterling Silver as a base metal and we use a minimum of 18k Gold and 24K Gold for a darker gold appearance. This method is achieved via electroplating the gold to the silver binding the two metals together. This is roughly 5 x thicker than flash plating meaning you will have a stronger and thicker layer of gold over your base.  It is superior to flash plating with roughly a 5x thicker layer of gold and far more durable. This has the elegance and allure of gold with the affordability of Sterling Silver.

Gold Filled

Gold filled is also known as ‘rolled gold’ or ‘gold bonded’ and is created by mechanically bonding a layer of gold to a layer of base metal usually brass. The gold is bonded to the surface of the brass using heat and pressure. This is a permanent bond so the gold won’t flake or peel.

The total weight of a gold filled item must contain 5% of gold.

Gold Filled pieces are a great way to add gold jewellery to your collection without the high price of solid gold. With the right care gold filled can last a lifetime if taken care of properly. It truly is a wonderful way to wear gold jewellery that lasts without having to pay the high price of solid gold. It is also great for sensitive ears and jewellery wearers as the skin keeps contact with the gold part of the piece.

Please read care instructions carefully when buying your Harry and Belle Jewellery to ensure they stand the test of time.
